Yazoo City, MS Monday, April 26, 2010—The American Red Cross is providing shelter, food, and comfort to people across Mississippi as they deal with the aftermath of the deadly tornadoes that swept through the area over the weekend. Damage is widespread from the tornadoes that touched down Saturday and thousands of residents are without power. Haiti has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere, much of which has been attributed to the threats of malaria and insufficient diet. The American Red Cross, MS Gulf Coast Chapter will be selling chili to raise money for its Heroes Campaign on November 5, 2008. Pints of regular and vegetarian chili will be sold at the Donald Snyder Community Center from 11am-6pm for a suggested donation of $5. National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11

Biloxi, Wednesday, October 1, 2008 — MS Gulf Coast Chapter of the Red Cross Stresses Preparedness during the National Fire Prevention Week. Last year, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross aided 183 families through recovery after household fires. That number 25% higher than it was in previous years. To address the rising number of fires in our community, the Red Cross has distributed over 800 fire prevention kits to children ages 5-12 throughout Harrison, Hancock and Pearl River Counties. As flood waters have begun to subside down the Mississippi river, the Red Cross continues to operate shelters, readying supplies and providing food and refreshments to relief workers throughout the affected areas.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter has deployed four local volunteers to Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Harold Boudreaux (serving as a service associate), Mary Ann Wells (serving as a service associate), Margaret Allington (serving as a client caseworker) and Grady Carden (serving as a warehouse manager). These South Mississippians will remain in Cedar Rapids, for three weeks to help that community recuperate from the disaster. [Read More]
AMERICAN RED CROSS PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON 2008

The American Red Cross Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter is preparing for Hurricane Season 2008. Executive Director, Bill Brent and Emergency Services Director, Bob Beebe have met with the Emergency Management Agency Directors from across the tri-county area to review their plan of action. Should a hurricane strike the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Red Cross will assist in opening and staffing emergency shelters and providing provisions to Gulf Coast residents.
The Red Cross is seeking individuals to become trained in Red Cross disaster response protocols to serve as volunteers during a disaster. The following training courses will be provided for community members interested in serving during a disaster:
Red Cross Delivers Help After Southern Storms

A line of thunderstorms and tornadoes swept across the midsection of the United States late Tuesday, killing more than 50 people, injuring scores of others, and destroying hundreds of homes and buildings. Red Cross chapters responded immediately during the night, opening shelters and providing comfort to those forced from their homes. Two local volunteers, Will Esteve and Hank DeSandre, have been deployed to assist with the response, along with the MS Gulf Coast Chapter's emergency response vehicle; possibly more will be deployed in the coming days.
